Join Us for a Free NHS Summer Health & Wellbeing Day – Including Life-Saving Basic Life Support Training

Local residents are invited to attend a free Summer Health & Wellbeing Day on Wednesday 12 August 2026, hosted by Southend Coastal Surgeries, at Shoeburyness & Thorpe Bay Baptist Church, 90 Thorpedene Gardens, Southend-on-Sea, SS3 9JD.

The event will be open to the public from 9.30am to 3.30pm and offers a fantastic opportunity for people of all ages to access free health information, advice and support in one place.

Whether you're looking to improve your health, learn something new, or find out about local services, there will be something for everyone. Visitors can speak with a wide range of health and community organisations, receive free blood pressure checks, and discover practical ways to improve their physical and mental wellbeing.

Including FREE Life-Saving Basic Life Support Training

One of the highlights of the day will be our free Basic Life Support (BLS) training sessions, running throughout the day. These short, interactive sessions will give members of the public the confidence to act in an emergency. Participants will learn how to recognise when someone is seriously unwell, what to do while waiting for an ambulance, and how to perform CPR. The sessions are suitable for adults and older children accompanied by an adult.

Why start with CPR? Because it’s the kind of thing people always mean to learn, but never quite get around to. And because most cardiac arrests happen at home or in public places, meaning the first person on the scene is usually a family member, friend, colleague, or passer-by. That person could be you.

This year, we want to give our community something powerful: A skill that could save a life at home, at work, in a restaurant, or even in the street.

Why Learning CPR and Choking First Aid Matters

Around 80% of cardiac arrests happen at home or in public places. Survival rates can be three times higher when a bystander starts CPR before emergency services arrive. Every minute without CPR reduces the chance of survival by around 10%.

In choking emergencies, those first few moments are just as critical; quick, confident action can prevent brain injury or death within minutes.

These aren’t just statistics — they represent real people, parents, children, friends, neighbours. If even one person leaves our health fair with the skills and confidence to save a life, every moment of preparation will have been worth it.

What's Happing on the day!

There will also be health talks, patient education sessions and advice from healthcare professionals on a range of topics to help people live healthier lives. Local organisations will be available to offer information and support for children, young people, families, carers and older adults, helping visitors connect with services that can make a real difference to their wellbeing.

Whether you stay for an hour or spend the whole day exploring the activities, everyone is welcome. Join us on Wednesday 12 August to learn a life-saving skill, have a free health check, and discover the wide range of support available in your local community.
